building old computer

I am do a little project with a 10 year old Compaq Presario. I have everything except the cables. To connect the hard drive I am using a USB to IDE connector. This actually working. I know this because it is displayed (Operating System not Found). I am wondering how I can put on an operating system of any kind onto it
 
I am thinking of putting linux on the system
I have a flash drive it will read
should i put a live USB Linux OS on it?
