Building Own Computer For College/Gaming

what is your budget?

I'll just guess your budget is $800... oh, and you forgot a PSU...and a processor...

Processor:AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2GHz w/ 2GHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core Processor - $300
Motherboard: ASUS A8N5X ATX AMD Motherboard - $75
Ram:CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB DDR 400 (PC3200) - $80
Video Card: HIS Hightech Radeon X850XT ICEQ II 256MB - $170
Sound Card: Integraded - Free
Harddrive: Maxtor / DiamondMax 10 / 160GB / 7200 / 8MB / ATA-133 - $50
Optical Drive: NEC 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black - $37
PSU: Rosewill RP500 500W Power Supply - $54
Case: any of these... depending on how much money u have left

and if that is to much money for you, then get this processor instead:
AMD Athlon 64 3700+ 2000MHz HT Socket 939 Processor - $235
but to warn you, getting that processor would be quite a big (noticable) step down in the systems performance

Processor should be bundled with the motherboard. PSU also should be bundled with the case. 450W, I figured I'd try that one before buying a stronger one.

Dont, case PSUs are crap, wattage mean almost nothing. AMD will be better for gaming, so give us a budget, encore4more's build looks pretty nice.

Encore's does look nice, I'm looking for under 900 bucks AFTER shipping.

Edit: Would my ninja case still go nicely with this?

lets say you get a $60 case, then the PC would come to about $830 before shipping... i would guess shipping it all would be $40...so, i am guessing it will come to about $870...
and if you are willing to spend $60 more dollars, you could get this processor instead...

cases are really a personal preference, these are just some of my personal favorites:
ASPIRE X-CRUISE -BK Black Computer Case With Side Panel Window - $59
COOLER MASTER CAVALIER 3 Silver - $49
ATRIX CSCI-A9001-C4 Black Computer Case - $51
Thermaltake Soprano Silver - $80
ASPIRE X-DISCOVERY-BK Black Computer Case With Side Panel Window - $62
ASPIRE X-Plorer ATXB8KLW-SS Silver Computer Case With Side Panel Window - $58

but as i said, cases are more of a personal opinion, and those are just my favorites

Awesome, also, I was looking at getting 2 gigs of ram rather than one, is that wise? or should i just stick to one like you had in your post?

i think it would be wise to go for the 4200+ X2 instead of another gig of ram, and then sometime you can add another gig in the future when things start slowing down...

and that's what you set me up w/ right? on the recommendation list, i mean.

edit: also I think i heard with the AMD cards that it would be equivelant to 3.8Ghz right? instead of 2?

that list is what i think you should get inside your price range. But if you are willing to spend a little more i would try to get this processor:
AMD Athlon X2 4200+ 2GHz w/ 2GHz HT Socket 939 Dual Core - $357

it is about $60 more and i think, well worth it.

awesome, i might try and swing that. Did you see my question about the AMD's?

Edit: Also, the Corsair RAM you have me set up for, that isn't the X2 or whatever is it??

And I was looking at going AMD, but someone told me it's harder to find stuff that sync with it or something?
no, i don't think that is true, if i am understanding you... i haven't heard anything like that

i would just advise AMD is the best right now for gaming, and is easily the most popular brand of CPU here on computer forum...:)

nah i meant my question about the processing speed liek would the AMD 3800 2.0 ghz actually be kinda like 3.8ghz or something? that's what I had heard.

i really don't know...
i know Intel has higher clock rates (like 3.2GHz) but i know AMD process more data per clock rate... that is why AMD is faster at gaming...

i think a Intel Pentium 4 at 3.8GHz would be faster than a AMD Athlon 64 at 2GHz (like a 3200+)... but i don't think it would be faster then a AMD Athlon X2 at 2GHz or a AMD Athlon 64 3700+ (2.2GHz), or a 3800+ or 4000+ at 2.4GHz... and definatly not faster than a AMD Athlon X2 at 2.2GHz...
see the AMD Athlon X2 series are dual-core, which baisically means it is 2 processors in one little package... so i don't think any Intel pentium 4 would stand a chance agaisn't a AMD Athlon X2

ahhh I see, awesome :).

edit: Does the PSU that you told me about supply power to the PCI-Express, I was reading reviews and someone said it didn't or something in the early reviews.

edit: wait, nm.
