Building Own Computer For College/Gaming

i think it would be wise to go for the 4200+ X2 instead of another gig of ram, and then sometime you can add another gig in the future when things start slowing down...
i disagree.
processor speed increasese speed of the comp, but an extra gig mean more apps at once...
without the exta gigabyte the ram runs out before cpu resources do
thats why i upgraded to 2gb...
of course, i used to have a single core... and didn't upgrade the memory right when i went to dual core...

You might consider a 7600GT and an X1800GTO, all three of those cards a pretty much neck and neck.

processor speed will be more important in gaming... memory will be more important in running more apps... but even 1gig is suitible for running apps unless he is doing some heavy multitasking... which he didn't say he was doing... and the title does say for college/gaming...

o and for our disagreement aobut the X2 3800+ being able to OC to speeds of an 4200+... i doubt he is going to be overclocking if you read the first post u will see he is new to this stuff:rolleyes:

i still like the look of the x850xt's 16 pixel pipelins... very good for such a midrange card...

i think the only upgrade that is truly worth it from that... (i mean that will make a BIG difference)
is this (SAPPHIRE Radeon X1800XT 512MB)
unless u are willing to pay for that, i would stick with the x850xt

I would have to agree with encore...

I had to make a similar decision with our family comp. It's best to get a better CPU, and only 1GB of RAM because you can easily upgrade to 2GB, however you cant decide to upgrade to a 200Mhz processor after already having the 3800+.

Okay, so due to recent happenings it looks like I might not be able to get a new comp built for a little while. So lets say I wanted to get a new graphics card for my dell dimension 4600. what's a really good card for my AGP slot? (I just got into BF2 hardcore, and want something to kill part of the lag.)

the 7800GS would be an excellent choice.

Umm, preferrably under 150, but if you can find one for a lil more like under 230, that would be cool. I could see if i could find it refurbished or something. :).

absolutely, a gig of ram is a lot easier and less expensive to upgrade than a cpu

yea i think i'm just going to upgrade my current system for college

it's a dell dimension 4600

i got 4 gb of available ram space and I'm running 2 x 512's of PC3200 right now and i think i'm going to stack this on there instead of the 512's

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820231047

Only because my sis was messing around in my computer one day when i had my comp open, i had just showed her the ram sticks i put in, and she yanked out the 4th slot, breaking the holders. (i was pretty ticked) So i only have 3 slots

So then i can run the first two on dual channel and the last one not, at 2.5 gigs right? and then i think i'll just pay the extra 20 bucks on the AGP card to get the real version not open box. cuz newegg said they wouldn't send me any of the CD's Drivers, Cables or any essential parts if i needed them, and to actually expect them not to be there lol. I was like why take the risk. So i'm getting the real version as soon as it becomes available :P.

sound good?

2.4ghz pentium 4

I do not agree about the processor issue. The difference between the 3800 X2 and 4200 X2 is only 200mhz. Easily overclockable. Especially, in this case for BF2, 2 gb will give more of a performance boost than 200mhz (which can be easily achieved).

we have been through this...:) the 4200+ can overclock higher... the 4200+ is not just an overclocked 3800+, it actually has 11 multiplers... the 3800+ has 10... so the 4200+ can overclock higher than the 3800+

Generally speaking it will, but not everyone will overclock there processor to the max. So if your not going to overclock, the 4200+ would be a better choice than getting the 3800+ and oc'in it. It also sounds better ;)

Yea, and think. 200mhz can easily be achieved and won't cut life span unless temps go up. You can't produce another 1gb of RAM out of thin air.
Even if temps go up, the life span won't matter much unless you plan to use it for about the next 9-10 years...
Also, where did you get that the 3800+ OC'ed won't be as good as the 4200+? My Opteron 165 is at 2.4GHZ and surpasses the 4800+ in most SiSandra benchmarks.
Also, it won't really matter to him if the multiplier is higher simply because he won't be overclocking it much.

yep, hey where can I get a copy of windows xp? I already have my product key that I can enter in on my computer. I just lost my old copy. The comp i have right now has a 40 gig hard drive and a 100 gig hard drive, and right now my 40 is the primary, but I want to make it vise-versa and reload off of my 100 gig. Is that what I have to do?

I might want to reformat anyways, cuz I just have a bunch of crud lost in my system that I don't even know where it went lol.
