Building PC, can I save HD?

Hi,

I have a 160 GB serial ata. It has everything on it. I have a corporate key of XP Pro, with no disc. It is legal I do work as a consultant. The issue is I am building a new pc, and the Motherboard manual says on page one that a new installation of operating system will be required. I have no way of backing up the drive. So here is a 2 part question.

Can I purchase another drive, use it as the C drive and then add the old drive with all my info as a secondary? A friend says no cause the 2 operating systems would conflict...

Also, can you mix Serial ata with IDE ata?

Yeah, just get the new PC built and install XP without the old drive then after you get XP installed, add it into the mix. There would be no conflict with installing it before you install XP but leaving it out during install will safeguard you from overwriting the data.

And yes, PATA(IDE) can be used with SATA as long as the motherboard contains SATA connections and (most often) 1 PATA connection.

Seems like a consultant would know this...
