i am in the process of building a new desktop. I already have 2 altec lansing speakers with sub woofer. I was told that the sound card does not really matter and any will do. Is this true and can someone suggest some in the moderate price range?
thanks in advance.

and to answer you question yes it matters which one u get some can put more pressure on the cpu to do all of the music encoding also you will have better sound in games that use EAX and other features that are in the card

it won't matter if your not an audiophile or a huge gamer. If you game alot you want one that has an onboard DSP to to take the sound processing off the CPU to give you extra FPS. If your an audiophile you want one that is high quality like the X-Fi series, but your speakers would be the limiting factor in sound quality so a good $30 would be fine
