Building system - Not a gamer at all

Hi

So, this is the processor I am going to buy:
http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=12200BD3212

It says "retail box"; but doesn't specifically mention a fan/heatsink. So would it come with that?

If it does come with the HSF, I am not going for the higher priced cooler for now (i now know that my previous computer was mainly affected by a bad motherboard rather than a very hot room; I have another computer which works fine).

1, Please answer my above question

2, ASUS Quietdrive DVD-E616A - 1 - $21.60
LG GSA-H54N DVD+RW - 1 - $31.10
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB - 2 - $231.76
Corsair XMS2 2X1GB PC2-6400 - 2 - $267.12
BFG GeForce 8600GT OC - 1 - $144.99
Coolermaster CAC-T05 Centurion 5 - 1 - $49.68
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Atx LGA775 - 1 - $127.93
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 1 - $278.88

Sub Total: $1,153.07 - $125.00 (rebates) = $1028.07 + tax + free shipping (all canadian)

Is there anything I am missing here (first time, building a system)? I have the O/S, PSU and Speakers (input to receiver)?

3, Finally, this dilemma is bothering me. I do want two hard disks (as I have selected above); one for my O/S (the only two big folders in this one would be "program files" and windows) and the other for all data files (like photos, videos, movies, documents etc). Even if I install a lot of games, software etc, my 1st hard disk would never need more than 30 or 40 Gb MAX. So basically, my 1st hard disk need only be 80gb max. But the 2nd one could be as big as possible (a 500 or 750 gb would do the job).
I am never gonna put my data files in the 1st hard disk to avoid loss of data (when it needs to be formatted due to some problem and the 2nd hard disk is not affected at all).
So ideally, I would want a 80gb hard disk + a 750gb hard disk. But at the same time, I want both the hard disks to be very good (good rpm, speed, buffer size etc). But I so far, I cannot find a very nice hard disk (like shown in the list above) which is as small as 80gb.
Am I missing a trick here..........not sure if this is a silly question?

Retail - Everything an processor should have CPU, FAN...

OEM - No fan, just CPU

I would much appreciate if you can plz answer my questions 2 and 3 in post # 23 today, if you have time.

I will get those rebates only if I order in 2 days :(

If you really want a fast primary drive you can buy something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136033&Tpk=Raptor+74GB. A little overpriced though, IMO.

One solution would be to buy two 500GB drives, and partition one of them into 80GB + 420GB. This way you could store data on the 420GB partition and 500GB drive. When you need to format and reinstall, all you'd need to format would be the 80GB partition you're using to keep the programs on.

So I'm guessing yuo dont want the Window's HDD cluttered, so you want another large drive for that stuff... Just get an SATAII 3GB HDD. With 16MB Cache though. I suggest Seagate or Western Digital

CEEWI1 and OSCARYU1............your advices really were useful. Thanks guyz.

(prbly going with CEEW1's suggestion on the O/S hard disk)

Hey oscar.......mind if i ask.........are you in high school/college/univ? I am a student too here, in Toronto. Good luck with your test today.........the little spanish i know = "ola" and "amigo" :D

What would you guyz say if I get this for my O/S Hard disk:
http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=15080DR9676&vpn=WD740ADFD&manufacture=WESTERN DIGITAL

and two of these as my DATA hard disks:
http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=14120DR1310

I would like to know if the above is a nice choice and also if there will be any compatibility issues (as they are not exactly the same kind....different rpms etc)

The other thing is...I really don't know much about RAID configuration. But it seems to be in most people's mind when buying hard drives these days. Is that just useful for a hardcore gamer? Or do I, who uses computer all the time, but not really for games see a big difference? What the heck do I need to do to the above setup to make it a RAID? (Buy two of each hard disk???........not gonna do THAT for sure!!)

Those hard drives are fine. About Raid, im not sure becuase i have never set it up before and i don't realy know the performance gain from it. But its good to have a raptor for the boot drive.

Hey guyz.....I had to come back for one more question :)

The items are being shipped right now; except for the motherboard (gigabyte GA-965P-DS3) because it is OUT OF STOCK.

Now, this gives me a chance to rethink about my motheroboard.

I am not gonna confuse myself or you guyz.

The only other options to me (other than the GIGABYTE one from some other place) are

1, P5B-E
2, P5B-Deluxe

Can you please tell me if both the above motherboards are perfectly compatible with all the other items I am buying. Would they support any items that the GIGABYTE would support. Again, these are the PARTS i am buying:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 - 1 - $278.88
ASUS Quietdrive DVD-E616A - 1 - $21.60
LG GSA-H54N DVD+RW - 1 - $31.10
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB - 2 - $231.76
Corsair XMS2 2X1GB PC2-6400 - 2 - $267.12 (5 sticks)
BFG GeForce 8600GT OC PCI-E- 1 - $144.99
Coolermaster CAC-T05 Centurion 5 - 1 - $49.68
Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 Atx LGA775 - 1 - $127.93

That is ALL I NEED TO KNOW guyz. Just the compatibility issue.
(plus if you have any comments on gigabyte vs asus here :)
