Building WITHOUT a Case

Now I know this is going to sound like its coming WAYYYYYY out of left field and all, but it is just an idea.

Is it possible to build a PC inside of something other than a PC case, like say a drawer, or will there be problems?

The reason why I ask is because I have no room on top of my desk for a PC, but I have 3 HUGE unused drawers.

It's possible, but you'll have to do some heavy modding. You'll also have to think about cooling, static, dust, etc. You could always try building a PC with this "case"...

Thats a rather interesting Design :)

I was going to coat the drawer in Anti static Film and I was thinking about putting large rear exhaust fans in back and top. 2 big front intake fans , but the dust part I have not really figured out yet

If you really want to you could just stick all the parts ontop of your desk... it would run fine. Some people build a sort of open air workbench, but solutions like those are mostly meant for people who swap out compenents a couple of times per day.

In theory it'll work, people build computers in suitcases and such, you'll just have to figure out a way to get proper ventilation.

Man, what's being pictured in my head looks sweet. 2 fans at front (with blue leds) and in back (maybe a little 4cm at top), with fan grills over them. Of course, behind the 2 front fans, out of view, you stick on a thin layer of air filter material, say, tights, or buy proper, precut squares of material you can re-use.

And don't worry about static, just rest the components on a ripped up cereal box. That's what I do when I fiddle with heatsink.

EDIT: You'll want to think which way round to have mobo, depending on where you want the output connectors to be.

antistatic film is useless,.. if youre going to put the pc into something else than a metal box, i can only suggest you make some metal plating on the inside of it, so the pc is shielded from radiation. its not even required, since there are also acryl computer cases. about dust,.. meh, a normal pc case gets quite dusty on the inside too. i wouldnt worry about it too much.. if you put together the components of a pc, and just have them laying on the table while starting it up,.. i'll work ( if you dont create any shortage because of a metal table or so ofc ;) ) so, i wouldnt worry about it too much ;)
