builing own computer

i know a little bit about computers and i know i need a new one. i went to the pc mechanics website and they tell you how to build your own computer and i think i can manage it. the only thing i need to know is if i can just buy any parts and will they will work togeter. if i can, cool but if i cant how do i know what to buy and find out what will work with what. thanks!
 
Start by reading the 101's by Praetor posted under most of the subgroups in the forum.

To put it simply you can't jsut buy parts and expect them to work. There are compatibility issues.

What will you be using the computer for and how muhc do you want to spend on the computer.

if you tell us these two things, we can easily come up with a couple possiblities of things that should be compatible and work well for what you want

i want the computer to be mainly agame computer to play simple to advanced games.(ex. a cheap 10 dollar game to rome total war) i would like to talk online with my frineds and also do things like powerpoint and microsoft word. all in all i would liek lots of gaming and just a little bit of tools needed for schoolwork.

i forgot to say that the price can be up to 1500 but i would really like it around 1000 thanks 4 all this help by the way

Uh, yea. if he wants to spend $1500 on a computer that would be overkill.
What all do you need? Computer, Monitor, Case, Key + Mouse, XP, etc?
