Built PC not turning on

I didn't know where to post this so this seemed like a good place.

My friend and I built a pc for him and when we finished, we turned it on only to find out that it stayed on for about half a second before dying down. We tried taking it apart and trying it again but same problem. here are the specs (i'll try to be as accurate as possible but i don't remember some of the specifics).

intel core 2 E6420 2.13ghz 4mb cache
asus P5K-E mobo (im not exactly sure about this but it was an asus mobo for sure and the pic/description looks about the same)
corsair ddr2 pc6400 800mhz 2 x 1gb ram
seagate 120gb HD
nvidia 7900 GT 256mb
thermaltake 600W PSU

when we turn it on, the fans all spin and the LEDS all come on before completely shutting down. The mobo light is always on so i really dont know what the problem is. we even took the memory out to see if the pc would beep when booting but it still did the same thing. thanks for any help.
 
if u mean reduce static electricity by touching the metal insides of the case, then yes we did that. but if static electricity had something to do with this, im sure one of us would have felt something. thanks for the suggestion though.
 
So your getting no system error beeps at all?

I just have to ask this, but are you sure that the switch on the back of the power supply is set to your locations voltage? 110 vs 220?
 
is yor name ben??? i just had this same problem cuz i just finished building a computer and i forgot to put in the grounding screws into the case so ??? alright if this is ben then i figured it out

i'll tell my friend to make sure the mobo isn't touching the case.

on the back of the power supply, all i saw was a I/O switch to turn it on. how do i set the voltage?

There is a little slider switch that will change the voltages. Most power supply's have it so that it can be used in either Europe or the States. Some times it gets bumped, or it came set to the wrong voltage direct from the factory. It's worth checking. Sometimes the simplest things cause the biggest problems.

I don't know which model PSU you have, but here is a pic for reference on where that switch is.

You forgot to plug-in the 8-pin CPU power connector. It's at the top left hand corner of the mobo next to the cpu. Make sure you have a power supply connected there. Otherwise PC will do exaclty as you described.
 
thats really weird tho cuz i have like almost exact same specs and our problem was like excatly the same lol

I was going to suggest that, but, how many times do we have to tell people to make sure all the connections are made. Plus, without seeing it, its hard to know for sure if thats what is wrong.

It is a simple mistake to make, but if they follow the manual, it tells them what connections to make.
 
ok so the problem was that the PSU was defective. my friend went to return it and is getting a new one so i'll update once he tries the new PSU. thanks.
 
we had suspected that something was wrong with the PSU cause we ruled out everything else. so he stuck it in another computer and the computer didn't work and so he returned. the guys at fry's tested it out and it didn't work either. i dont exactly know what the problem was, sorry.
 
Be carefull switching that red switch at the back of the PSU setting it to the wrong one for your country will overload the PSU and can kill all your computer parts.
 
thats like really frekin weird. i have like same exact specs except for like 2 things. i got a 500w antec psu and something and i think the cpu is different but otherwise everything is exact same. i even bought everything at frys
