i was playing Company of Heroes when it froze then the screen just went blank and i got the "no signal" sign from my monitor. at first i thought it was just going to restert itself b/c my comp does that sometimes when i play for long periods of time becuase (i think) it is overheating or something.
Then to my suprise i smell something burning. THe comp was still running so i just pressed the on button til it turned off.
After a ittle while (like 3-5min) i turned it back on. everything turned on except i didnt get anything coming up on the monitor and started to smell something burning. I turned it off and took out the card and when i smelled it, it smelled like something that was just burned.

my gfx card is a 7800gtx by XFX with an AC Silencer 5 fan/heatsink.

the burning smel is strongest near the fan part or where u plug it in to the PSU.

my question is if i can fix it somehow, and how can i make for certain it is just my gfx card and nothing else?

and if i do have to get a new card any suggestions? and could i just plug in the new card w/o reformating?

i dont think it was the fan cuz it wasa still working whn i turn the comp back on again.

anyways..any suggestions on what card ishould get? i was think of a 7900gt, gtx, or 7950gtx
thought about the x1900xt(x) but i dont think its best cuz i have a SLI mobo.

I'd rather quickly(so the burn is still "fresh") take off the heatsink and start looking around on the board. Smell around a bit if you must. I'm wondering if a capaciter or something blew somewhere on the board.

the part that smells most burned is the little black haetsink looking thing near the end of the card (the end part where u connect the card to the PSU)

Oooooh... And that has some capaciters under it, I beleive. If you're just going to replace it and toss that card, I'd like it ;P Could be a fun project. I'll give you an x300 for it! :P Haha

maybe overclocked a bit too much?

i sure hope mine doesnt blow.. i've got an XFX 7800 gtx as well, but still with the stock heatsink and fan.

i found out it was this little black square thing under the heatsink thats near the powersupply connector. there was nine of them and only one of them was melted.

btw i just got and installed the x1900xtx a few mins ago. ya! does anyone know how i can check its temps?

Wow, dude... You got over that loss quickly.... I would be, like..... crying if a card that expensive burn out on me......

well i was really pissed and sad but once i called my aunt and told her about it she let me buy the x1900xtx, sorta like a really early xmas present. It made me happier. :) but waiting for it to come in was torture.
