Burning a CD so it is readable in a DVD player

I was wondering if it is possible to burn a movie onto a CD so it can be used in a DVD player?



And just to be clear, the movie is not pirated, and hence does not break forum rules. I have the rights to duplicate the movie.
 
dvd has very loose standards

a dvd player will read mpeg2 video off of a cd, so long as it's formatted correctly

kvcd's can hold 2 hours of 528x480 mpeg-2 video on a single 80 minute cd, for example

and svcd is strict dvd standard mpeg 2 video, but can only hold 1 hour of 480 x 480 video

a regular old vcd uses mpeg1, which can only manage 1 hour of 352 × 240 video that's FULL of attrocious artifacts, and looks something like the 1st generation of realplayer streams back in the day. i wouldn't waste my time.

Note that DVD-Video and VCD are not the same format. However every DVD player I have ever seen can play the VCD format. But the VCD will not be DVD quality.
 
Thanks for the responses guys...

a few of you said that I won't retain DVD quality, or something along those lines....what if the movie wasn't originally a DVD? What if the file is less than 700mb? How do you know it's DVD-Video file format, and not a regular old avi or mpg? :P
 
nero 7 ultra will do it for you.
if the file was less than 700mb, it depends on the file format.
also, some dvd players will plays divx/xvid files, and avi files too.
you might want to check into the dvd players compatibility and burning the data onto the cd rather than a vcd.

That's the thing...I'm not sure what DVD player I'll be using it in and the compatiability of said DVD player.
