Burning Question

I was just wondering... does the CPU, RAM or whatnot have any effect on the burning speed? Or does the speed depend entirely on the burner (whether it's 16x or 52x for example)

Burning cds at 16x take 7 minutes and dvds at 2x take about 25 minutes. Is this good?

Most burning programs will tell you how fast your burner is actually going. Your CPU speed won't change how fast your burner actually is burning at a certain speed, but might restrict it from acheiving the speed...

Those speeds sound pretty good. I beleive most of my DVD's burnt at 8x take around 13 minutes, so that should be pretty much correct. Heh, the real test for speed is the converting from one video format to MPEG2 ;)

I see... I asked because I'm pretty sure my burner has 8x DVD burning speed listed in the specs but the fastest I've seen it burn was at 4x. (Ironically, it burnt fastest with the cheapo DVD-Rs I bought. The more expensive ones burnt at 2x or 2.5x . All the DVD-R/DVD+Rs I bought are 8x by the way).

Any idea as to why this is happening? Is it the CPU restricting the speed as The_Other_One said?

I just noticed your CPU and RAM in your sig (monkeyshims). That is a crutch. Youtin, you do seem to be getting decent burn times. Yep, quality and compatability of blank media does make a big difference. My burner will burn the good quality 8X media at 12X.

Hmm, so the reason I can't get up to 8x burning speed must be the quality of the discs as m3incorp said. I'm scrimping so I buy only the cheap discs, hahaha:o I wonder if I'll get a better burning speed if I buy a more expensive brand? I'll try it.
