Hopefully there are some here that have experience with computers designed for business. Here's my situation:

I have many programs running at one time including photo editing, video editing, database, website editing, financial software, etc. It wouldn't be uncommon to have 12-15 programs open at once and working on a few at a time.

I never play games and never will. I run two monitors and might want to go to three. I want my programs loading fast. I don't need monitors, keyboard or mouse. Just the case with appropriate hardware. Anyone have experience with what works good in this type of working computer. I've read that a sold state drive would be good to load programs on and lots of memory, but I could use specifics on CPU, GPU, PSU, memory, mother board and anything else that would be important in this application.

What you need is a really good CPU and a GPU capable enough of handling three monitors at one time.
Please tell us you budget and location.
The solid state drive will boot you PC fast considering you have set it as a primary drive and also all those programs which require getting data from the harddrive will be done quickly.:good:
 
I'm in the U.S. and would like to keep it under $1000, but will spend more money for significant increases in performance. If I was to sacrifice something, it would be the third monitor, if it was to help with the budget.

My procedure to date has been to load all my programs on one drive and put all data on another.

Of course you'll need a good PSU, like Corsair, much dependent on which GPU chosen.

(Try to keep wattage low while getting the performance desired)

Clean looking, nearly silent, and will run will handle just about any office application you can throw at it. It'll also run three monitors with the correct display port adapter. Though not server grade, all components high quality (especially the powersupply).

Why would you choose a socket 1156 CPU.
Better to choose from 1155 cpu range like the i5 2500 and better performance also and also future proof

I was just following up a build with the previously suggested CPU. Either way it's not hard to switch out a CPU and motherboard. I was mainly just trying to take care of the rest of the build as I know there are people here who are far more up to date with chips and motherboards than me.
 
Thanks for the input.

So you guys seem to be saying that the better processor is more important than a lot of memory. I was under the impression that lots of memory was high on the list for the number of programs I run at one time and the memory intensive applications I use. 4 gb seems rather small these days. I would have thought the reverse.
 
four gig dimms of ddr3 1333 in a pair from crucial are 80 something a piece, get those, skip the l33t gamer crap, its not worth the expense, for your application, the standard timings will be fast enough, i cant notice the diff between my ddr2 800 low latency stuff to my 1333 higher latency ram.

Professional is a waste of time.... if you need VMs or anything get VMware player, its free and has multicore support vs windows xp mode which is limited to one core.

might also suggest, doubling up your storage volume and doing a raid 1 on it, to keep your data a little more secure in case of a hardware failure on the harddrives fault.

I'm currently using an online backup service. I haven't had to restore anything, so I'm not familiar with how much of a pain that might be. What are the advantages of a Raid 1 setup?

the raid 1 setup will allow you to at least have local access to the drive, it will be mirroring the drives, so if one fails, the other will still have your data intact locally. the cloud service is a good idea too. better to have your eggs in many baskets
 
What's involved with setting up a Raid 1. I know I need a 2nd drive, but do I need 2 more drives, since I'm going to run a 2-drive system? I'm guessing I need a Raid controller (found that from a search), but the price ranges widely. What would I need? Is there any other hardware? Is this easy to setup or do I need to study up on how to do this? As you can tell, I not familiar with raid at all.
