Buying a iMac

Hi everybody,

I am new on this forum and I hope I will find some answers and tips from you.

I have a five years old PC and it is time now to buy a new computer because he is too slow.

I am looking for every possibility, even buying a mac computer. I know nothing about Mac computers and most of my friends have only been on pc. What I need is a computer on which I can browse the internet, send emails, listen to my music cd, photo and video editing and some little works like Word, Excel and Powerpoint and that's all. I don't want to play games.

My questions are:

- What are the pros and cons for Mac?
- What do you know about iMac? Is it a good purchase? Why?

Thanks for all!

Macs are harder to upgrade, overpriced, and very "limiting" to the user in my experience. IMO I'd get a PC. You can build one yourself that will do everything you need for far less than a Mac.

Thanks tknick90 for your answer but what do you mean by:

It's not possible to upgrade? How do we do it?

You say also very limiting. What do you mean exactly?

Sorry but I am not a specialist in computers :)

Building would still be cheaper/better. Wait for more opinions and you will see that a lot of people agree with me.

Upgrading is more difficult on a MAC, or any pre-built computer for that sake. I meant that the MAC OS is limiting, meaning it doesn't have many advanced features, just really basic stuff.

Macs are good, if anything get a macbook pro.

The only thing you can upgrade in a mac is the ram, that is easy to do.

When you get your mac install windows on it as well :p

The OS is deff not lmited and basic. It deff has more advenced features than windows and it's not as limited as a pc

If your wanting to buy a prebuilt (cause not everyone wants to build) I would go with PC. It can be upgraded and there are more options for upgrades. Yes mac does have a that fancy media software on it but you can go buy a pc for less then go out and select the software that will fit your needs better and you will pay much less for. And as for the OS, I have been using vista for almost a year now and I have had no problems with it, especially with the service packs that are out now. Plus more software is compatible with windows.

OK thanks everybody but have you ever had any problems with iMac? Minor or major? I heard about the screen reflecting too much light. Is it true?

Thanks again!

No problems at all with macs.

The glossy screens reflects light, but it is that bad. Just don't sit in the sun :p

I have a few friends that do recording some choose mac, some like pc. I have noticed no quality difference. As for the OS, yes some people may complain about vista but I been using it on two different computers with no problems. It's basically a preference. And look online and local stores there are more software for pc. Now not all the software is great for pc but there is a lot of good ones out there for the pc. Mac user's think there comp's are the best when I look at them there is nothing special but the expensive PRICE.

Macs are great business computers. They are horrible at gaming but are amazing at photo, video, music, and browsing the internet. There are alot of good things like... I have never gotten a virus on mine. They arent invulnerable but they are close to it. theya re extremely fast. They have a great back up system (Time Machine) in case a a rare crash. Switching from a PC to a Mac isn't all that hard at all. I found my self navigating around the system like a pro with in weeks. A couple cons are the are expensive. But your paying for a top of the line machine. They don't have some programs which they should, such as a paint program, they only have picture preview programs. Not all PC programs are compatable with OSX. If you have the money, and are only using this for business and browsing and video/ music editing/listening, then get an iMac. Hope that helped some what.

Not really, I have had a couple problems with my Powerbook G4, but it is a 2003 and very slow, only 1GHz. I crashed it a couple times cause i was trying to do more than it could process. but the new models are amazing. My dad has a 24" iMac, wicked fast, no problems. He loves it.

Another thing to consider is the software that you plan to run.

If you run programs other than that which is automatically installed with the OS, you may be required to purchase the mac versions. (ex: Microsoft Office) Also, my experience has been that mac software seems to carry a small premium over PC software.

What I was trying to say is the MAC OS is for..ehh noobs. You don't really see whats "actually happening" its all very simplified into the Mac GUI.

It's almost saying, what's so good about a PC :p

lol, I'm almost saying who needs computers at all. :p

Macs aren't bad, some people just prefer them, I'm just not one of those people.
