Buying a laptop

I'm looking for a notebook to use as a desktop replacement. I was wondering what kind of specs I would need for it. The main things I would be using it for would be listening to music and watching movies and running multiple programs at once like the internet, itunes, and some music composition programs that I have. I would also need a good sound card for music recording and stuff. I would also be doing some occasional rts games like age of empires and starcraft. I'd rather have too much power than too little but, I'm only 15 with a part time job and I don't have loads of money, so I'd like good power for not too much over $1000. Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

I seriously doubt you'll find a true desktop replacement for under $1000, or one that could play games worth anything. And espcially not with anything more than a basic sound card.

Laptop's aren't made for desktop replacements. Their hardware just can't hold up like desktop's can. I wouldn't suggest getting one unless you just HAD to have it. You can build a much better desktop for the same price. Besides the technology lasting longer, the hardware should "live" longer, too.

look at Newgg and Ebay, try to find something dual core, 1-2GB RAM, 120GB+ HDD, DVD/RW, i mean, just try to find something with the best specs for the cheapest amount of money

the only desktop replacement type units that ive been in contact with are all over £1000... which is considerably more than your budget.

Hmm... Maybe desktop replacement wasn't the best term. I've decided that I'm still going to keep my desktop, but I need to find a good laptop that is still functional and I can do things on. I looked online and I was led to Dell where I built one online and it looks pretty good for what I should need. It's a E1505 Dual Core notebook, 1.83GHz, Windows media center edition, 1GB Shared Dual Channel RAM, 80 GB hard drive, 8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability. I think it is pretty good but you guys know a lot more than I do so what do you think?

I can't think of a single budget notebook that comes with a high quality sound card. The speakers in laptops are normally bland/flat sounding...so a good sounding card can be overlooked if the output from the speakers kills it anyways.

i cant stand listening to music through my laptop speakers (it just sounds like the song with alot of static), thats why i use headphones

get a USB sound card for the unit; i know creative make one but the name of it slips my mind now.
the system you picked out looks like a good spec too

yes and make sure that it is one wtih a dedicated power cable or you will be looking at not great sound, if you get an external one

my laptop is abt 1200$ and its speakers are better than my headset, which is very good, so i use my speakers whenever i can, (like not at school)

Brand and model #?

Good sound is always a personal preference, pricing has nothing to do with it. For example Sony sells pretty high priced audio equipment, but they are one of the worst in terms of sound quality/clarity.

Yes exactly, but due to the marketing everyone falsely believes they are the best audio you can get.
