Buying a notebook for college

I'm going to be a freshman in college in the fall, and my university issues every freshman and junior a brand new laptop that they can use for 2 years. This year, they are issuing the HP EliteBook 8560w Mobile Workstation. I'm really excited about it as it's an extremely powerful laptop. However, it's over 7 pounds and only has around 3 hours of battery life which I'm sure will trickle down to 1 hour before long.

My actual question: is buying a lighter, more portable notebook to supplement the school-issued laptop a good idea or just a complete waste of money since I'm already getting a computer? If I were to buy a notebook, I would have a budget of around $1,000. I just don't know if it's a good idea and need advice on whether to spend that money on another computer or save it for something else.

My laptop issues laptops too but they are way more expensive. It would probably be better and cheaper for you to buy a laptop and you will get the same specs.

It Depends

Is the computer your school is supplying, do you have to pay for it or do they let you use it for free during the year?

You're required to pay a "technology fee" every year that goes toward the laptop and other technology on campus. So basically, you're required to receive the laptop as it has necessary software that is used during class and for assignments.

You should consider what's your main aim, if for gaming, I think you should buy a new one, if just for basic work, the laptop your school-issued should be enough.

I would get an Acer Aspire 5251, that's what I have, runs most games great, WOT run great on low Graphics, at 20fps. I got is on sale for $199.
