Buying a Processor

I'm a complete noob when it comes to processors. I need to decide whether to buy a Quad Processor clocking 2.5 ghz or a Dual clocking 3.0 ghz. Can someone explain to me which is better and why?

Thanks in advance,
Stoic Sentinel

What processors are you referring to when you say dual @ 3ghz n a quad @2.5?

I agree the best cpu's for the money are definatly the phenom tri-cores.

I'm trying to choose between an AMD Phenom X4 9850 Quad Core 2.5Ghz and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ Dual Core 3.0Ghz

I am wondering whether a Quad Core is better, even though the processor speed is less?

*Edit*
I am also wondering if you could explain processor speed to me?

Neither one. For the price of a 9850 you can get a Phenom II X4 810. For the price of a 6000 you can get one of the Athlon II X2 or maybe a Phenom II X2

We need to know what you are doing with your computer to determine how many cores you will be needing! If all you do is internet, and occasional gaming, a dual core is all you will need. In 95% of cases a quad core is not needed.
And I agree 100% with Stranglehold, get the newer technology CPU's for the same price if not cheaper. But I guess that also depends on if you have a motherboard than supports AM3 processors. What motherboard do you have?

Replace your 6000+ choice with the regor 250-

And replace your 9850 choice with either a 720 triple core (cheaper than 9850) or 810 quad(slightly more).

But like I said, we need to know what you are doing with your PC.

That board will support AM3 processor's no problem. So now we need to know what you do with your PC. Gaming and internet only? Or something else?

In that case you'll either want the 720 triple core (2.8ghz) or the 550 dual core (3.1ghz), either of those will play any game and are $100-120.
