buying a processor...

hi all,
just wondering how to establish which sort of CPU, mobo and PSU i need to get an old pc going. the PSU blew out and fried the mobo with it so i just told the shop to get rid of the dead parts and i kept the case and hard drive and disk drives etc. they also threw out the processor along with the mobo and PSU.

cheers, kain.

I don't know how old the computer was, but I seriously doubt ALL that was dead. I'd actually say if the power supply died, the drives would be more likely to be fried over the processor or RAM...

Anyway, I don't quite understand what you're asking. I mean your basically just building a new PC here. What are you're limitations? AGP graphics? Or would onboard be fine? Budget?

no only the power suply and motherboard died the processor didn't, the shop just threw it out because they reckoned to get a mobo to match it woulda been AU$400 so i just said don't worry bout it. i still have the ram and the hdd.

i just want to spend as little as possible to get it going. i'm pretty sure all that i need is a power supply + CPU and mobo. that was all the shop threw out anyway. its just going to be in my room for downloading music so i don't get viruses on my good computer.

cheers, kain

...OK, something's wrong here. $400 AU is about $315 US. I am sure you could of found a motherboard for much less than that for the processor! Do you know what the old processor was?

Um, well, I can't be too much help to you because I'm in the states :o I guess if you have some site you'll purchase from, I could find stuff. Heh, though it's almost 5am now and I'm going to bed :P

on the sticker on the ram it says 128MB UNB PC133 CL3 dunno if that helps.

the budget is no more than 150AU$ the cheaper the better though! as i said it won't be used for anything other than downloading

cheers, kain
