Buying New Card...

I've been meaning to get a new card for like a year and i remember comparing products a few months back but a lot of new stuff has come out since then.

I have:

AMD Athlon 3700+
1GB Ram
280 GB HDD
My integrated graphics are ATI RADEON XPRESS 200 Graphics with up to 256MB shared video memory
Expansion Slots; 3 PCI slots (2 available), 1 PCI Express slot (available)

It's the end of the semester and I just returned a few books and my budget is around $100-$150...I mostly want to play stuff like NBA Live and sometime sstuff like half life two that are mass multiplayer...mostly its gonna be strategy stuff like Civ 4...

Looking at my comptuer specs and my budget what would you reccommend for a nice graphics card that will last me a little while?

Thanks and sorry for the long post

Is the 7600GT good compared with say the 6800GT...some reviews have mentioned that its better to get teh 7900Gt..but those cost around 300 bucks...the 7600GT is more my price range...am i losing ALOT of performance? or can I live with the 7600GT? I'm not a hardcore gamer...just a casual gamer

The only problem that I have with the 7600GT is that it is 128-bit. However, benchmarks have showed that it has beaten the 6800GS which is the same price range, memory capacity, etc except the 6800GS is 256-bit! Just check around this part of the forum, bet you can find the link of the benchmarks.

If you are not a hard-core gamer, then you shall be fine!

The 7600GT beats the 6800 by the way.

The 7600GS is around $99 and the 7600Gt is around $169....I looked at the specs and they both kinda seem the same but there are some differences...if you only play games like civ 4 and sports games and ur budget is quite low then u shud get the 7600gs...unless u save a lil more cash then u shud get 7600gt

Well, the 7600GS basically replaces the 6600GT, offering better performance at a similar price. The 7600GT does the same to the 6800GS (and 6800GT).

The 7600GT is a superb card for most purposes, although it sounds like even the sub-$100 7600GS may be enough for you.

So is the 7600GT worth the extra $60 to $70? Because thats within my budget..anything under $200..but if the GT is the same thing as the GS then I don't want to spend the extra $70 bucks...So the million dollar question...should i or shouldn't I give up the extra $60 to $70 for the GT?

It's definitely not the same thing. Both cards are reasonably priced given the performance they deliver

In that case the 7600GT is a good choice.

a good card would be a 6600gt (budget) or 7600gt (i recommend it)
The 7600GS is significantly better than the 6600GT, and significantly cheaper.
