Buying New Computer

Hello all. One of my co-workers is looking to buy a new computer. I wanted to get your advise on what a good computer for him would be(DELL BRAND) for what he does. He runs Quickbooks mostly, usually running excel, word, etc, @ the same time. We have a small network set up in our office. I believe he is trying for a computer that will be an overkill of what he needs, hence wasting the companies money. Could you please give me your input on an ideal Dell computer for him? Thanks alot!

Doesnt matter? Just the ideal computer (not an overkill) of what would be good for the things I mentioned before. Thanks!

The Dimension E520 under small business (http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/dimen_e520?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04) is more then enough...it has a Core 2 Duo which means he will be able to run numerous programs such as word, excel, quickbooks, etc, with no problems at all. This computer is a bit of overkill, though, and cheaper solutions are listed below.

The Optiplex GX520 under small business (http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/optix_gx520?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04) (Pentium D model) is less capable then the previous, but will still handle multitasking with ease. This computer is probably the best choice for his situation, but the last one will also do just fine.

Finally, the Dimension 1100 under small business (http://www.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/dimen_1100?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd) will handle the tasks, but will not do it as smoothly and problemless-ly as the above two. It will probably be a bit slower and freeze up for a minute or two while multitasking, but generally should be fine in the business environment.

Hope I was of some help for you!

Thanks and 1 more question of advice.

Thats on the line of what I was thinking. The "coworker" had choose a Dell 9200 which starts @ $679, upgraded prossesor to xeon(i think) upgraded hard drive from 80gig to 160gig, upgraded RAM for 1gig to 2gig. Just a few of the things. Anyway, ending price was $1699. I told him he was being ridiculous. Just wanted to get some elses opinion.

Now one more question. What about an ideal computer for running autocad. Actually running at least two versions of autocad @ same time as well as all the microsoft office tools, adobe photoshop. This also a Dell Brand.

$1699 is a rediculous amount! If you build your own, you could get a terrific business machine for under $1000.

If he's just running a few business apps, he doesnt need a xeon, either a Celeron D or Pentium 4 will work fine.

If ou want to run multiple instances of AutoCAD, the Core 2 Duo would be best, but I dont think Dell has them in their desktops, so the Pentium M would be sufficient.
