Northwoods are real good overclockers but its an outdated platform. But it has HT so obviously going to be cheaper than buying a new dual core rig. I still think its worth getting a newer platform so you can upgrade later.ro0kie said:I'm bidding on a used Pentium 4 2.8Ghz HT (SKT478) NorthwoodC processor for $81.00. Do you guys think its worth it or should I js buy a new processor? I'm probably going to buy a new mobo too so I'm probably going to spend at least $200 for both. Should I go for it?
for a heck of a lot more than thatbut sure thats a fine proc for umm... surfing the internet lol...
they're good but there are better setups if we're talking an ideal worldif you're doing video editing or something i'd go with AMD X2
hdd matters squat in most tasks, and raid 0 is overratted.i'd say hard drive speed would matter more (to the user who notices load times and such) so get a mobo that supports RAID 0 and like sata2 and get 2 Western Digital SE16 hard drives or something, that should be plenty fast (AND LARGE)
if your upgrading your mobo, then dont bother with s478, it's a great platform but is old. Now if you were just getting the cpu on its own as a single component boost, then i'd say go for it, but if your getting a new mobo then you should really be getting s775 (or s939 if you can be tempted by amd, heck even M2 if you wait long enough)Do you guys think its worth it or should I js buy a new processor? I'm probably going to buy a new mobo too so I'm probably going to spend at least $200 for both. Should I go for it?
bo one one saying that nor suggested that you saidare you trying to tell me that an X2 would NOT be better than a p4 2.8ghz w/HT? sorry, but it would.
i'd i merely pointed out that since your suggestion bore no relevance to the facts at hand, and was therefore pure fantisy, that there are better fantisy options out thereif you're doing video editing or something i'd go with AMD X2
unless your doing some serious mass data moves, or streaming, it has little benefit on a desktop. Anyone saying they got there windows boot time down from XXX to YYY has simply seen the normal effect of a reinstall and a new hddbut RAID 0 definitely is not overrated, in fact if you're doing something more than just internet surfing and word documents and excel documents then hard drive speed will cut load time down alot.
http://www.anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2101&p=11actually hdd effects load time alot, it doesn't effect app's that are already in ram obviously, but RAID 0 definitely is not overrated, in fact if you're doing something more than just internet surfing and word documents and excel documents then hard drive speed will cut load time down alot.
as we all know, hard drives are probably the slowest and least efficient parts in a computer, however they do give the advantage of mass storage.
Yes because we all will die over the extra 2 seconds... die enough to buy a second harddrive.to the user who notices load times and such
Dont be foolish. The X2 isnt being considered here ... unless you're willing to front the cost of the motherboard as well as the cost of the X2-cost of the 2.8C he's considerig. We can always find something better but lets stick to the scope at hand.also, are you trying to tell me that an X2 would NOT be better than a p4 2.8ghz w/HT? sorry, but it would.
because we know that DDR2 works so well with NorthwoodCs and X2s....also i suggest getting DDR2
Please do some bare minimum research before posting crap like this. Dual channel is 2x64bit (or 72bit in the case of ECC), single channel is 1x64bit (or 1x72bit again). If single channel was 1x128 then that would arguably be superior. Good thing it isnt. Score one for the facts teamor two sticks of DDR for dual channel, two 64-bit lanes instead of a single 128-bit... that'll increase performance alot too.
*President goes to make a speech*ya wanna do me a favor and just ban me ? jeeze i made a mistake u dont gotta be a dick about it, just correct me.
I think it would be an excellent deal, espically if that processor has the M0 stepping, which would allow for some pretty good overclocking.ro0kie said:I'm bidding on a used Pentium 4 2.8Ghz HT (SKT478) NorthwoodC processor for $81.00.
