Buying new mac book need help

i am going to get a new mac book and i want to max the ram out but they want $500 more for a 2gig upgrade shouldn't i be able to fo this my self for way cheaper?
 
found some memory on new egg for $85 per gig after I install it do i need to do any thing special???
 
Memory is not just memory. There's DDR, DDR2, etc etc. I assume the new ones use DDR2. If it's a laptop, you need to be sure that it's laptop memory. I don't know for sure what type it uses(pins or speed) but as long as you find the specs and match them up, I would think most any would work...
