ok, i want to buy a legit WinXP home cd.

however i cant use an upgrade option, dont have any other win OS cds. and i made this comp so i dont want to be ripped with any dell only OS install discs things.

i stopped paying attention to what all the terms mean these days for computer software, and the 40 million pages of legality issues i have to read through if i want to play freecell. i just gave up and when to lan shacks to play games.

I just want a legit copy of standalone winxp home that doesnt need to check my microsoft history, and one that i can keep using as i keep upgrading my computer.

can someone point me in the right direction here. thanks.

I don't really get what you mean. You could just purchase a copy of Windows XP Home Edition, not the upgrade, or OEM or something. Vista is out now though, so if I were to invest in a legal copy of a Windows OS I would probably get Vista. That being said, I've had my legal copy of Windows XP Home Edition (I think its an OEM copy) now since 2005.

Yeah, you'll be fine with OEM discs off NewEgg or something... but make sure you don't get some disc from Dell or some other manufacturer. :p

OEM is assign to your mobo, so you can't install it on another computer or after you upgrade mobo in yours.
When you upgrading other components you get points for every component you're change, and when you reach certain number of points you have to reactivate your OS (simplified) :) .

I actually have a version of XP Pro that I got for a mere 50 us. It says Dell on the front, but it has no restrictions on what PC you can install it on. The Dell is merely superficial.
