C2D installation

I did a search and didn't find anything relating to my post.

I just purchased a C2D E6420, but I started thinking of the installation. I have never installed a new processor and wanted to know if the retail processors come with compound it the packaging or I need to buy some.

Is there a website with a good walkthrough as to how this is done. Please let me know.

it will only fit one way. it comes with with thermal material on heatsink but you should buy aftermarket ones.

Wrong.
Stock heatsinks are absolutely fine. Think about it, would AMD/Intel ship heatsinks with processors that didn't do the job? That would cost a fortune in warranty replacements.

Just gently place the processor in the socket (making sure it is the right way round, and not 90 degrees off). Then, peel plastic off bottom of heatsink (<<VERY important), place on processor, and clip/clamp down.

Intel/AMD ship cpu's with heatsinks that just barely do the job. So its better to have a aftermarket HSF. The ones that come with the cpu's are the ones you can find new for $3.

There should be some grey stuff on the underside of the heatsink. That's the thermal paste.

The stock heatsink that came with my dual core Athlon gave me load temps of 50C (possibly lower) at full load when overclocked (with voltage at stock of course). In my books, that's good.

Yeah, whatevers on the bottom of the heatsink is the thermal paste or thermal pad. Just sit it down on the cpu and clamp it down and your good to go.
