Cable Internet Question

I got a question for everyone.

I live in a dorm in a college, and the internet here sucks a lot. It's alright for just going to webpages and stuff but we can't use any filesharing programs on it (like it's impossible to use them) and trying to play any game is pretty hard. Even a game like iSketch (online pictionary for those who don't know) lags a little bit, and the less said about EverQuest the better.

We do have a cable connection in our room though and I was wondering if it is possible to connect a cable modem or whatever to the cable outlet in our room. Do they have to open up a wall to install a cable modem?

Thanks for any help.

First Off No they don't have to put a hole in your wall. Just because you have cable in your room doesn't mean you will be able to get cable internet access. You need to ask whoever runs the cable system there

Indeed, it requires special equipment mounted at the closest splitting point by the cable company to have internet access by cable.
However, it's most likely that you could have cable internet access if one of your neighbours already has such a connection.
But just plugging the cable in a cable modem does not start your connection. The MAC-address of that modem has to be enabled by the cable company.
So call your cable provider for more info.

Usually Dorm rooms in colleges are run by their own ISP and do not have cable connections. Ask the Network Admin at your college, and he will let you know right away.

Also for certain games online - you can ask to open up the port that it is on so you can play the game.

Odds are no: they have to drop off a cable modem, you connect the modem between the wall and the computer :)

True but for a university environment then you should be good to go.

What university? :)
