Cable Router

Are there any recommendations on router/switches for cable connections? Clearly a gigabit router is a waste of money, considering the typical bandwidth for a cable connection will never (at this moment in time) reach this speed. Also, any opinions on router/hubs provided by isp's? Even though some support 10/100Mbps, are they free for a reason?

Most of the Cable Routers supplied by an ISP are just fine unless you want to configure something out the normal on your network. They will all do the job of connecting you to the Internet.

A Gigabit router on the local side would give you Gigabits speeds between your local devices but wouldnt improve your Internet connection speeds significantly. The Netgear Rangemax WNDR3700 and WNR2200 will both give you 300Mbps local wireless connectivity, or if you want a budget device then the TP-Link TL-WR841N is a 300Mbps wireless cable router.

I would look at just purchasing a cable modem from your ISP, and buying a router from a store or online, as they are generally cheaper and you have a wide range of devices to choose from. If you only plan on sharing internet between devices, then you don't need gigabit, however if you plan on sharing files between devices a gigiabit router is the way to go.
