cables modems

i just got cable internet. yep, i'm in the 21st century now.
i am renting their modem until i get my own.
it is a Modorola sb5101 surfboard. do i need to get this modem ? there are different model #'s for what "looks" like the same modem. can i use any of these ?

or will one of those linksys modems work ? they seem to be less expensive

is there any connectivity or whatever issues with any of these modems ?

anything else i should know ?

You can use any cable modem you want... -_-
Go on eBay. There are some cheapass modems on there!

If you are on comcast simply go to any store buy a new cable modem plug it in and a webpage will come up to register the mac then send the modem back simple as that

just to be safe, i bought a same model new from newegg for $40. i thought they are all the same. but oddly, to me, comcast knows what modem is there. i had to reregister, and that was kind of a pita.
