calibrating monitor brightness?

used one of those grayscale images to try to calibrate my monitor yesterday . both my brightness and contrast is set to maximum but i still cannot see the last quarter of the black images. the problem is my monitor is too bright for me at the moment but according to that grayscale , i still have to increase the brightness. most info i've read usually say to leave contrast at maximum and then adjust brightness to be able to see all the changes in that grayscale. do people leave contrast and brightness at maximum and what do i do if i don't like the brightness at the moment. i need the monitor to be calibrated for manipulating digital images? thanks for any input.

I also use my system for graphics work.
You can't see the last quarter of the black images because your contrast is maxed out. Dial back on the contrast and the blacks will come up. Leave it where the last one or two blacks are just barely visible.
If I left my brightness and contrast at maximum, it would be blindingly bright and unusable. My contrast is at about 20% and my brightness is almost at ZERO!

My two centavos.

Brightness at zero? You must have a weird monitor!!! My brightness is always at max.
It does sound weird, I know. Setting my brightness at zero still gives me an image, just a smidgen too dark for accuracy. Full brightness is like looking at a lightbulb, it's so bright. I have to use the custom user color levels, too. Using the preset 6500K is way too blue and bright. Red is at like 95%, Green at 80%, Blue at 55%. Otherwise everything looks way off.
