Alright.
I am going to buy myself a nice camera, I was wondering what to stay away from, or maybe some tips.

I am not really looking for a specific camera, some recommendations would be nice, or just tips and stuff.

I am looking around $500 or so.

Thanks.

Good pictures and easy to transport.

Is the quality different from a digital camera opposed to something like the Canon Digital Rebel XT.

obviously cheaper would be better but for just over $500 you can get a rebel XT
unless your not looking for an DSLR and would prefair a compact ?

Well if all you want is good picture quality then I would recommend something along the lines of the Canon A720. The Canon XT/XTi are best if you know how to use a professional DSLR, otherwise you will end up just running it on auto mode so you would be wasting your money.

I went to Wolf Camera, and asked the guy about a good camera for around $600.
He recommend the Nikon D40.

Its $550 in the store.

Can I do better online?

Thanks.

Yea the Nikon D40 is a great little camera. I have used it a few times and really liked it. Image quality is really good, feels good to hold and is quite light. My best advice would be to go along to you local photographic retailer and try a few out and see what you think.
