Can a 1333mhz CPU run on a 1066mhz MoBo?

CPU that I currently have installed: http://ark.intel.com/products/27248/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-E6300-2M-Cache-1_86-GHz-1066-MHz-FSB

CPU that I want to install: http://ark.intel.com/products/30784/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-E6750-4M-Cache-2_66-GHz-1333-MHz-FSB

My friend bought me the e6750 CPU for my birthday but I'm not quite sure if it will work correctly with the motherboard that I currently have.

I've never really replaced a CPU before so I don't really know what to expect. Would there be any downsides to installing this? Is there anything else I need to do before installing it?

I don't really want to break anything and I need to buy thermal paste if I am going to install it (which I would like to avoid if this won't work.)

Any help is appreciated.

It may or may not work. All you can do is try. If it doesn't boot up then it most likely doesn't support it. If after replacing it with the original cpu, you may have to reset the cmos to get it to boot. What model of hp computer do you have?

HP Pavilion a1640n.

I'd like to try and figure out if it will work before I go ahead and install it because I still need to buy thermal paste regardless. If it turns out it doesn't work, I'll be out $7-10 and the gas to drive to Radioshack or Staples and back. (Money is tight)

Like I said, it may or may not work. If it works, it will probably run at a reduced speed. I thought we had a thread here a while back about the same issue and the cpu speed was reduced. But I bet it would still work. There is no bios update to add cpu support. There is one available but its not for cpu support.

Thanks, I'll install it tomorrow and hope for the best. I assume that installing this wouldn't do me any good and would only run the risk of bricking my system?

If the pc doesn't support the processor the worst that will happen is that it won't boot up. Put the old processor back in and it should work just fine. However like I said before you may have to reset the cmos which is simple.

The reason I say it won't is because it has a Intel P965 chip set.
I have 2 HP's with that chip set and I can't adjust anything in the BIOS.
That is why I rebuilt one of them with my FX-4100 change over.

But I remember a pc I worked on that had a 800mhz p4 with only a 533 bus and it still worked, but at a slower speed.

Give it a try.
All you will be out is your time and money for the TIM.
But it will be a gamble and you said you were tight on money.
