Can a 3G phone run on 4G LTE service?

yes you would need an LTE capable phone. I heard rumors that there is actually a new standard going beyond LTE supposed to be released with the Galaxy S4. However, its probably not the most reliable information. LTE is already faster than most cable internet connections.

Interesting. So you're saying you can download a video faster through a smartphone than a computer.

Not exactly. The problem with LTE is its not a consistent speed. Depending on the service, I can get anywhere from 30-45MB/s. At my house however, I only get about 10MB/s but my upload speed is 5MB/s as opposed to the 1MB/s I got with my cable so I can upload videos faster than I could before.

megabits not megabytes, otherwise that'd be crazy.

on my phone it says 27532kbps down 8752kbps up. Your telling me its kilobits and not kilobytes? Its confusing if they are all lowercase.

I changed it to display kB/s (kilobytes) and at my house where Im lucky if I have LTE service, I got 842 kilobytes down and 118 up. So thats roughly 8 megs down and 1 up right?

Speedtest will actually give you your speed in kilobits or megabits per second.

So for the speedtest I just did, shown as megabits per second. That means I could theoretically download a file at 7 megabytes a second and upload at 1.37 megabytes a second.

It's not smartphone vs computer, it's LTE vs cable or whatever type of connection you might have.

Where I live, I can't get cable or DSL and have a wireless connection that maxs out at 1.5Mbs down or up. With 4G, I have gotten as high as 20Mbs downloads but more often see 8-10Mbps which is much faster than my home ISP provides.

When I need to download a large file (like an ISO) then I fire up my Smartphone on 4G and connect my desktop to it via wifi and download the file.

Gentlemen, as I described in another thread, my smartphone is experiencing substantial increases in downloading speed which can last for several hours before going back to a normal downloading speed.

As to why this is happening, it can't be because I paid for it bacause that ran out a few weeks ago and that cycle won't start again until the 17th which is when I pay the next bill.

I can't go to my ISP to inquire for obvious reasons. I'm left with speculation. The only thing I can come up with is my ISP is adding 4G LTE service on top of 3G. But how would a 3G phone be affected by 4G LTE service (which hasn't reached my area yet)? Why is the internet speeding up for me?

Edit: experiencing frequent interruptions to my internet connection which I'm speculating is due to 4G LTE work going on in my area.

Is your phone capable of 4g lte? If you are receiving lte, then you will have an icon on top that will tell you if you are getting it or not. I was getting lte before they even announced it in my area.

No. Not 4G LTE capable nor did I get that icon you referred to. Was your phone 4G LTE capable?

Yes its a 4g lte phone. If your phone isn't 4g lte then you aren't getting it. Even 3g speeds depends on a lot of things. You could have the same signal strength but get different download speeds.
