Can a CPU be changed from motherboard to motherboard?

Hi. I've been unable to search for this question since I get all kinds of different results.

Basically, I just installed a new CPU on a new motherboard, but I didn't like the motherboard, so I want to get another one and use the same CPU. Is this possible?

You need to know the socket type of the CPU, then get a board which has that socket.

Also, you need to ensure that the new board can handle the speed of the CPU.

AMD has a 'Socket A' type socket, and Asus boards handle 'Socket 775' (LGA775).

Thank you. Yes, I know all that. I was just wondering if it was possible to change an installed CPU from motherboard to motherboard, but from your response it seems it is. Did I understand you correctly?

Also, if it can be done, how would I go about doing it? Are there any special steps?

Of course its possible, you remove the hsf assembly, undo the lever holding the cpu in, and remove it. Simple as that;)
 
Yes. Just use the Search function on CF to find hundreds of Posts dealing with how much TC to apply.
 
Clean off the old with 91% isopryprol alcohol and cotton swabs or coffee filters(personally i use coffee filters). Then replace the thermal compound with new.

I followed you suggestions and everything is working properly now!

For people reading this post:
When I applied the Thermal compound/paste, I had to spread it around with my fingers to 1) make sure it was everywhere in the CPU and 2) to make sure I didn't apply too much (I did, so I removed a lot with my fingers).

Socket A is way old... after socket a came 754 and then 939, both if which have been discountinued already, then came AM2 which is still around and the new Phenoms use AM2+

Yuck, you used your fingers? =P Probably not the best idea, but oh well.
