Can a Power Cut cause a surge

This may sound stupid, but I was on my pc before when suddenly it turned of and when it started back up again, it said the mobo shut down the power because of a power surge.

I have just found out that there was a power cut, less than a mile from me, at exactly the same time as the computer went off. Is this a massive coincidence or could it have actually caused a surge?

(I have turned the switch off and on from the back of the psu and I have had no more problems since)

Could have been nothing but a small power fluctuation on your end to cause the power supply to restart.

Ahh i think i know what the problem was.

Last night, we had a power outage that lasted about half a second, so that may have caused it?
