can anbody help? computer keeps forgetting settings

hi there - this is my first post so apologies if it's not in the right place...

i have had my DELL computer for about 6 years now and have had a few problems with it in the past, ie viruses, hard drive failure etc but have always been able to sort it out.
However this past week it's started doing really odd things. Firstly it keeps freezing on me so have to switch it off without closing down and when i reboot it's almost like it has forgotten its' settings. Everything has gone back to the computer's original factory settings, such as the desktop picture and screensaver etc and it says welcome to windows xp, click here to take a tour. It also loses its' internet connection so i have to delete the old one and set a new one up. It's all over odd and am not sure what the hell is going on?!
I have norton antivirus and have also run spyonthis scanner but both have come up with nothing... do i need to run them in safe mode?
I have just gone into Word to work on a document and it's had to reinstall it. Also all my documents and photos have moved? :confused:

any advice or hints would be gratefully received.

try using system restore to restore to a previous state.

i think your problem is that your user profiles been reset so yougo back to factory.

boot into safe mode(f8 on boot) and find out
