You really need to just test it, or find some program that shows the drive's compatibles... Technically any drive can read a commercial duel layer drive, but many drives do have issues with "home-brew" ones. I've even had some DVD-ROM drives that would read DVD-R's just fine, but couldn't read DVD+R's.

As for the speed, I'm not sure right off. It's not going to be fast, that's for sure :P I forget the transfer rates of DVD drives... Find those and just do some calculations...you should be able to get some general idea of the speed.

ok..thanks for the advise.. I actually have 11 DL DVDS to burn for ONE program.. I think I might be better just buying a hard drive to transfer it all

For burn time, i think the actual burn speed is 2.3x (not that it matters, just a micro-technicality :P), for an 8GB file, expect something in the ballpark of 45minutes.

As for compatability, some read only one type like this one (which reads DVD+R DL) while others like this one dont read any and some, like this one read both.

Since its an older drive you're dealing with odds are it wont support dual-layer discs.

the program actually totals in at just over 75GB... and yes it is one program. You can chose to copy all the DVD's the your hard drive on insert them when the program needs info off a certin DVD..The program is an automotive repair program. I transfered all the data to my hard drive and now I want to move it to a diffrent computer.. (swiched jobs.. This was my personal program that I paid for.. that I kept on my works computer).. now that im changing jobs I want to bring the program with me to my computer at my new job.. but I damaged the original DVD..left them in my trunk for over a year and there peeling now.. So I called the company and they said to get new disks would cost $45 per disk.. wich is less than I paid for the program.. but I dont want to spend that much.. they said it was legal to burn the info because I own a license.. as long as the info gets destroyed from the original computer.. So yea it is one program at that size.

I dont think it would. IMO wouldnt it be faster and cheaper to burn all this on single layer DVDs?

I wish I could.. but when the program copys the info it copys them as an ISO.. then the program read what ever one i need.. lucky for me. ISO is a prety standatd cd/dvd image.. So I can just take the ISO's in nero and burn them really easily.. I can not use single layer DVD's because each iso is a little over 8 gigs... I use power/magic ISO and break the iso's up into 4 gig portions for single layer dvd's.. but that also means re constructing them on the other computer..

I am thinking if I install the program on the new computer. then create the same folder that it created on the other computer when I transfered the data in the same place on the new folder. then put the ios's on an external HDD..and copy them into that folder.. I think that might work.. unless there is a way the program will know I did not copy them from DVD?.. with my luck the company that makes the program will say not to do it that way. I would kinda like to had hard copy backups anyway..

you can just keep them all on the hard drive, and mount them as virtual drives

that way you don't need to buy those expensive discs

ok..So when I go to burn them.. even tho there 8 gigs each it think they need to be on CD-R/RW.. but that will not fit.. when I put one in it says not enoght space (duh).. whats going on with that..

You wont fit 8GB on a CDRW. Period. You need to use DVD-mode for that

im not trying to burn a CD.. its an ISO.. so i open it as a saved project in nero.. The only problem is it thinks its a iso for a CD not a dvd, and its 8gigs

Well you can always try spiltting it, or use a dual layer media. They are still pretty expensive though at the moment. If you have a portable hard drive, then its problem solved right there, because you can save it all on your portable hard drive and mount it anywhere you want.

hahahahahahahaha

dude, if you're just burning the iso to mount on the other computer, why not just split the iso in half, so you can use single layer discs........

you're goofy, man
