So, I bought this 1TB external hard drive...And for some reason it's listed as 'unavailable' ??

When I went to Devices and Printer in control panel, I see it labeled as 'USB Mass Storage Device', however it won't activate as anything.

when I connected it, I went through the drivers, and everything is all good...Except I can't use the thing.

Simpletech 1TB is what I have.

Have you tried it on other computer?
I would also suggest that you update your device driver. Sure it has to be plag n play but its a good idea to update your drivers.

I have made a thread on this forum some time ago on how to prepare an external hard disk drive or solid state drive for use. Here is the link:

Your welcome :P

Cheers!

Only question I have about that procedure is why you included the info about Killdisk? I've formatted literally hundreds of drives and have never, ever needed Killdisk or something like it. Your writeup implies that it is a necessary step when, in reality, it is a step of last resort.

Many a time Killdisk is only a last resort. Stars is one of our "special" members that likes to go to extremes a bit too often :P

I don't understand why people have all these issues with external hard drives.

Just to be clear, you don't have anything on the drive you need?

Just right click on all the partitions on the drive and delete them. Then just create a new simple volume and format it.

I see Spanned..Striped..Mirror....no Simple, though.

and nah, I don't have anything I need on here

EDIT: hmm weird. I just deleted it, the the option appeared. Maybe the option was there the whole time. Oh well, no matter.

Thanks!
