i have an amd athlon 2800, an asrock m/b and windows 2000. Sometimes when I turn the computer on, it will not boot up, until i press the reset button, then it works fine. Strange eh? any ideas please...

My dad had an old FIC SocketA motherboard some time ago. Basically every time you tried to cut it on, it would just sit there with a blank screen until you pressed reset. Then it would run though POST and boot fine. Similar problem? I'm pretty sure it's a motherboard issue. His system ran fine for about 1.5 years, then it just died one day... Replaced the motherboard and it's been fine since.

That could be either a glitch in Windows itself or your boot sector has seen some change. If the board is a few years old an update for the system bios may be overdue since the Eproms can start losing information after a period of time. Often a power supply can present a problem since the post time also sees the heaviest draw on current there. A cold start could see this more. Hopefully these are the things to look at there. A failing bios will start seeing problems like rebooting while Windows is loading or sudden unexplained system locks while at the desktop even.

The Socket A board just replaced here saw 1.5yrs. of use. Hopefully the Socket 939 board now in will last longer then that as a backup case for the next build. If the problems get worse try lowering the memory timings. If there is a sudden improvement OUCH! New board or at least bios replacement time.
