Can anyone recommend a decent build and what are your thoughts on purchasing used processors?

Hi everyone,

My current PC is about 3 years old however a friend wants to buy it for $400 which I think is a pretty good deal. Here are the specs:

i3 3220 3.3ghz
Radeon HD 7770
8gb ram
1tb HD

For my new PC i would like to spend ~$600. Can you guys recommend a decent build for me? I will be playing games on it. Has anyone had experience with buying used processors? I would like to get an i7 however I know I will not be able to stay around my $600 budget with a new i7. I have a copy of windows 7 home premium that i used for my old pc. Will this be compatible with a new PC or should I get a newer copy?

My friend also wants my monitor but I am not sure if it would be worth it to keep it for my new PC or sell it for $50 and get a new one. Is my monitor outdated? Will it work with my new PC? Can newer games be played on it without any issues?

Let me know what you guys think.

What motherboard do you have? As long as this isn't an OEM computer, you could just upgrade the processor and get a better video card and possibly upgrade the psu depending on what you have. There is no way you can get a gaming pc for under $600.

So post what motherboard and what power supply you have and we'll go from there.

Socket 1155 is basically dead now. You could find a used 2500k processor, better video card and upgrade that psu for now. If your Windows 7 is OEM you might have a problem activating it on a new motherboard and you would need a new key.

He could get a new/used 3770K. I think that's the ceiling for his socket though. However, for some odd reason, the 3770k still goes for a lot of money.

I see several used i7 on ebay for ~$150 and if i get a $100 motherboard and $150 graphics card i would be spending around $700 total with everything else. I dont know if this setup will work below but it totals $543.92 without the processor. I dont want a top of the line gaming PC.

I will drop down to a 500w PSU. Is Ebay the best place to find used processors? Anything I should watch out for? Does anyone have a recommendation for a used i7 and motherboard combo?

You probably won't find socket 1151 used much lower then new pricing as I said earlier its a new socket. You might be able to find socket 1150 which is last generation and after socket 1155. Look for an I5 4690 cpu and Z97 motherboard. You really don't need an I7 I don't think.

Thank you, John. I will pick up the Z97 MB. I found several i7 3820 on ebay for around $150 compared to a $220 new i5. Would this be a good fit with the Z97?

The 3820 is socket 2011 so won't work with a z97 board. You have to make sure socket for cpu and motherboard match as they aren't interchangeable.
