i just bought a new dvd burner, and i'm wondering if it can burn cds as well as dvds?

also, my dvd burner didn't come with any installation cd, or a cd with a dvd burning software in it (i'm not sure if it's suppose to). so if i just copied a movie from my harddrive to a dvd disk, can a dvd player on tv play the movie?

It should specify on your dvd-drive box. My Dual-Layer Sony DVD-burner can burn dvd's as well as cd-rw and cd-r's.

I've yet to see any that don't but they're probably out there. But if you get a new one, it'll probably burn basically anything... Just read the specs

I've yet to come across one that doesn't, being that they both use the same optical assembly technology and color, there's no reason why it wouldn't, as a matter of fact, I'd guarantee yours does.

what about the answer to my second question:
my dvd burner didn't come with any installation cd, or a cd with a dvd burning software. so if i just copied a movie from my harddrive to a dvd disk, can a dvd player on tv play the movie?

No, you need decoders, and something to read the Vidoe_TS file and all of that.

you should have a burning softwear in windows.... Try to look for Nero, Sonic record now, or/and NTI.
Are yo talking about bought movies (like Mission impossible 3, Mr. and Mrs Smith, etc) or home made movies? Cause you can't simply burn a movie like that, and its against the forums rule to give instruction on how. But if you want to know how to burn one of your oonw movies, then we can help.

i'm trying to burn home-made movies, so don't worry about the legal issues. i have sonic record now, so i can use that software to burn movie files from my hard drive to a dvd disk?

ok...so right now, is your movie in your computer? if so, here are some instructions (i have sonic too, so i'm use to it)
1. open sonic record now. Put a Blank DVD into your Drive.
2. In sonic, go on the TAb where you See to DVD, and click on 'Burn image'
3. In there, broswe for your movie....simply click it, and then click on the red button 'burn'.
It will burn, but take quite a while.
here are a few tip. When someting is burning in your computer, DO NOT tough anything. not even the mouse, make sure the Screen saver is off. THe PC needs all its energy to burn your movie, so let it be.
Sonic Record now takes quite a while to burn, but it has good quality.

Now, if you are copying it form a DVD or CD, simply
1. put the original DVD in it (the one with the movie)
2. Go to sonic. and again, go to the tab with two DVDs....and click the first option, Exact copy. Now it will copy your movie.....
3. After a while, it will shoot out your DVD, and ask for a blank one, Simply do as they ask...and it will burn!

If you have any other questions, just ask! hope it answers your question.

i really doubt so.......cause its your own, you can od whatever you want with it.
If it was so....why do you still have access to blank DVDs, DVD Burners, and softwear to burn DVDs?

And you do want to have it....for example, the guy hears made a movie, and wants to view it to his TV, so he can therefore make a DVD, and even give some copies to his family, to see what he did on his trip (it was a DVD about your vacation right?) or whatever...
