hello
i just reinstalled xp. everything is up to date. service pack 2 all ativiruse, adware and spy ware up to date. it works fine but after a few minutes on the net it starts taking forever then doesn't open window at all just says not available. i suspect it has something to do with service pack 2 security but i can not do anything with the firewall.
thanks rob

i just did a system restore to remove service pack 2. i remember a similar problem before. i think service pack 2 is the reason but don't know why.

It may have more to do with how busy your service provider's servers are or how you setup your connection and drivers. I run SP2 here all the time and only rarely see a drag when browsing unless a web page is timed out of that server has heavy traffic on it. If your IE settings are too high active x controls and the popup blocker can hamper opening new windows at times.

thanks i tried all that. it works real well now but something about service pack 2 on this computer doesnt work. the firewall control my be part of it.
i would rather have service pack 2 but if i get it the internet works for a few minutes then slows then just comes up "this page cannot be found".

If its a problem with Internet Explorer, try downloading Firefox and try it out.

it's service pack 2 second time this happened. i can just keep auto updates off and stay with service pack 1 but i really want to know what it is that i am missing. from formatting drive, installing xp to getting on line then trying to upgrade spy ware, ad ware and antivirus as well as windows (disk is 4 years old) finally everything is working perfectly until i get service pack 2.
any ideas?
thanks for all your help

Recently I dumped an XP with SP1 cd for a now seen good buy on XP with SP2 for less then $100 in the retail box($95). Right after that someone found an OEM buy for just over $80-( :( ). If your disk is a little smudged or scratched up that still wouldn't stop IE from being installed correctly from SP2 unless you saved a bad download. I see slowdowns here too with more then one system connected. But that isn't any worry since user traffic will vary at any site at any time causing a slow down if bogged or down for regular maintainence.

the fire wall buttons were not working at all on service pack 2. now there is no fire wall so i downloaded zone alarm. it works well but these boxes keep popping up.
btw it seems to work better than ever. what if i just never upgraded to service pack 2? would i then run in to trouble with an outdated system?

When Vista comes out XP will be considered the "older version" then. Many run without SP2 installed. But it does include some security fixes. Zone Alarm free edition loves to give you prompts at first on things already installed on your system. That will include games as well as spyware/adware removers that need to connect to servers. For the things you recognise you simply choose the allow option and ZA will apply that. For thing unknown you choose the deny and then run even others types of virus, malware, spyware, adware, etc. type removers. Slowdowns while on the web can occur with or without SP2 installed. Are you on dial-up, dsl, or cable?

SP2 is by no way essential to run XP as you know by now. But it does have some fixes and upgrades included. The problem now is that more and more things require that SP2 be installed as a minimum on some newer softwares. Those are not the majority since anything that will run 2000 will not need SP2 in order to run on an XP system. Some games like Steam/Source will prompt you to update video and sound there when a new update comes out.
