in linux i am able to access my windows partion from the desktop, which i really like because i can get pics, files, and music from windows withoug having to save to a usb and transfer. Is there a way i can save something in linux and access it from windows without having to save to media.

Thanks, Jaosn

Well i found something that does the trick rather well. If anyone reads this and cares:

Ext2 Installable File System For Windows
http://www.fs-driver.org/index.html

i think the linux file system is ext3 but i dont know the difference and this version works ok for me.

I was just going to suggest something like that for local disks. Also just so you know Linux and Windows can both read/write/execute off of FAT32 file systems. So some users put like a 10 gig file swap partiton of FAT on their HD so they can access it from both platforms.

If it was networking all it requires is the set up of samba since it uses SMB to transfer files.

I intended on doing a fat32 partion when installing ubuntu, but i could only have 4 partions and couldnt figure out how to creat the sub partions. I have a small swap partion but i dont know what file type it is and what it is for. I was just told i need a swap that was bigger than my memory. So what was that for and can i make another partion with Fat32?

A swap partition is pre allocated HD space for virtual memory. If you run ext3 Filesystem you may not need to actually have a swap partition....don't quote me on that though I would google it first.

I am running reiser FS on my linux box and ext3 on my laptop and I can actually see both parititions in windows but it will not mount it. You have to use a utility that allows you access to that file system. Apparently they are adding features like this into windows in its next release, called vienna. Guess you'll be forced to upgrade again in 2010.
