Can I take my mom's old IDE hard drive, which still has XP on it, put it in:

hook it up to her new computer, and boot off of that?
She has VERY important business file on it, and programs which she is very comfortable with and work great BUT don't work on windows 7. And none of the new programs have backwards compatibility for these files, so she would have to start 100% from the beginning with tons of labels...
and she can't really afford to buy a new copy of XP for dual booting either, otherwise we'd already have done it.
Thanks for any help.
