Can I boot off of this?

Can I take my mom's old IDE hard drive, which still has XP on it, put it in:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182154

hook it up to her new computer, and boot off of that?

She has VERY important business file on it, and programs which she is very comfortable with and work great BUT don't work on windows 7. And none of the new programs have backwards compatibility for these files, so she would have to start 100% from the beginning with tons of labels...

and she can't really afford to buy a new copy of XP for dual booting either, otherwise we'd already have done it.

Thanks for any help.

I think that you might still have motherboard drivers that you will need to uninstall and install from the new computer. then it might work if you set boot priority to the usb device.

So itll work if I get the new drivers..

Is there anyway to have the option which hard drive she wants to boot off of? She doesn't know how to navigate a bios and that could cause problems..

Old hard drive installation in new computer with different hardware equals

NO.

Most likely XP is an OEM license and won't be able to get reactivated. You would have to do a repair install or fresh install. Is there something wrong with the old computer?

Have you tried compatibility mode or XP mode?

I see...not sure if it is a legit copy of windows I installed on it or not though.

Yes, we have tried compatibility mode, looked for updates, spent hours trying to find a different solution.

The motherboard got fried in our last power surge
