Can I connect my laptop HD to my desktop?

My laptop is having problems powering up. I suspect the dongle is loose so it is not charging. I need to get some data off the hard drive.

I have a Dell 600M laptop with an Hitachi harddrive Model DK23EB-40.

Do you think I can connect this HD to my desktop without messing it up?

it looks like it has the same connector. When connected to the laptop it has an adapter which I can pull off.

Think it will work? I can try plugging it into my desktop but don't want to accidently erase the info.

Newegg has hundreds of converters. Just look for 2.5" to 3.5" converter or enclosure. I actually have a USB to 2.5/3.5/SATA converter. Pretty neat for diagnostics.

I got the converter but can't see the drive

I bought a hard drive adaptor (44 pin to 40 pin).

I am able to boot my computer up and it see the new drive but it wants me to format it.

What do I need to do so I can read the contents so I can pull the data off?

Thanks in advance fellas!

Why are you doing this? Was there some problem with your laptop? Could you describe the problem? Perhaps you have a bad hard drive.

So the machine worked until the battery died? Just being 100% sure :P

Hmm... I've heard of some similar problems to this, where various external drives or previously used drives won't work on systems... I guess the first thing to check is that all settings are correct. I guess everything was entered automatically in the bios? How is the drive connected? Primary/Secondary, Master/Slave? Is the jumper set correctly?

Unless you need your CD-ROMs in your system during this process, I tend to disconnect the them so I have a free IDE channel and don't have to worry about master/slave configurations. Perhaps try this if you didn't...
