Hi, I am running windows 98 SE and I found all these windows 95 files by typing in win95 in find files and folders. Can I remove them without harm? I could use the extra space on my small hard drive.

Here's what showed up

Win95dll.ini

Win95ac.vxd

fixwin95.bat

swin95.l%

win95_ramchk_02jpg.lnk

clear_cache_ie5xwin9598_01.gif.lnk

Thanks for any help

well, a couple of those are pictures, and the rest dont look they have any relevancy to 98. Id do it.

Those files look like they are only a couple of kb's in size anyway but if your worried just move them to a different location- restart and if u dont encounter any problems after a day of normal use then it will be fine to delete.. although by the looks of the file types it shouldnt matter.

Most of them are under 100kb, except this one is 650kb (Win95ac.vxd) and is in folder C:\\WINDOWS\SYSTEM. How would I go about moving them and how would I get them back if problems occur?

I just want to be sure here. I don't want a major crash.

Thanks

I guess I'm going to leave them be. I was told not to mess with VXD files.

Thanks to those who replied :)

you might want to take them out one at a time and reboot your system each time to see what happens. Create a restore point before you take each one out.

I really can't imagine you need space that desperately. Get rid of one real jpg on your pc and it will be far more than this lot put together.

The .lnk files are just shortcuts to images (less than 1Kb each).
The vxd is some sort of device driver. I would not delete.
The ini and bat files are basically text (you can view by opening in Notepad). I don't think these are worth deleting and you won't know until an application fails months from now whether you need them.

Thanks for the reply. I only have 1.58 GB on C drive and it seems to fill up all the time. I do have 2 GB on a D drive, but it is partitioned and I have no idea how to use it or if I can unpartition it to make it one.
