Im rebuilding a new system, Cos my old 1 had a few problems but i don't have a windows cd.
Is there anyway i can extract just the bare OS from my old hard drive?
And use that on my new system? Its XP media edition.

No and even if you could I would never recommend backing up a system that had issues and copying it to another computer. Those issues will likely copy over with it.

You will need to obtain a new OS installer CD

Damit! they're so expensive! lol
Could i not even rebuild my old computer, System restore to day 1 then use that hard drive in the new system?

Not really you need an installation disk. If you registered with Microsoft you may be able to just buy a new disk, if this is a manufactured computer you can contact the company that makes the computer and order a system restore disk.

If all you do is browse the net you could try Ubuntu out.

Its free but its really worthless at gaming so beware if your a gamer.

Why wouldn't it work? Surely i can restore the old system then add new parts withouut changing the OS?
It was a Esystem and came preloaded from pc world 3 years ago.
So my only option to have windows is to buy a new OS pack?

Major hardware changes can cause issues with an OS. You may have to reload. If you bought it from someone see if you can order a restore CD from them (the company that is) and they are typically pretty cheap (like $20).
