Can I have Windows installed on two hard drives?

Hi everyone,

I have a hard drive question and would be thankful for any help or insight you could give :)

I currently have a dual hard drive system:

C, which is 250 GB and has windows installed on it
D, which is 75 GB

I have come into possession of another 250 GB HD, which also has Windows pre-installed on it. I want to put it into the secondary drive slot in my computer, where the 75 GB drive is now, so I can have more space. Will the fact that the second 250 HD has a Windows install on it cause problems?

Bottomline question is this: Can I have Windows installed on 2 hard drives without any major problems?

Thanks very much!

it may cause problems, but if C: is the main drive it will always boot from it. if your drives are IDE set the one with your windows install to master and the other one to slave.

If you are putting a hard drive in your system with windows preinstalled on it that wasn't made for your machine, yes, it will cause problems if you try to boot to it. If you want to use this drive as extra storage then just delete everything on that drive.

Thanks!

Thanks for the helpful replies!

The second harddrive I would be installing is one that is made for my computer. It is a duplicate of the HD I have as my primary (preinstallation of windows included).

Since my computer will boot from the C Drive (the first 250 GB drive with the windows preinstalled), could I

1. install the second 250 GB drive (with the windows preinstall) on the D drive
2. boot from the C drive
3. then delete everything from the HD in the D drive (the second 250 GB drive)?

Again, thanks very much for the help.
