Can I install a cheap OS with an external cd drive?

Well basically to use an external cd drive I need to install it first...and I thought without an OS that'd be a problem...

It should be detected as a bootable device within BIOS. From there you can promote it in the boot order or select the boot menu when booting a bootable media, to boot.

The only thing you'll need to do is make sure that your BIOS detects the external CD drive, and make sure the boot order is set correctly to allow you to boot from it.

Like the guys already said above, you just need to select the external CD drive as the first boot device. Here you have instructions on how to do so for Phoenix BIOS.

Why do that? That's what the boot selection menu is for instead

hmm.. couldn't understand why you don't want an OS on your laptop.
Cheap OS might not be as good as the "expensive" one.
Take a second thought.

He's asking if he can use an external DVD drive to install an OS, not about not wanting to install an OS.
