hello, this is my first post as i am a noob to computers. i have a HP pavillion a720n.

AMD Athlon(B) XP 3200+ 2.20 GHz
A7V8Z-LA motherboard

blah blah.. the stock system.. according to hp.com the max ram i can install is 1 gig which i find to be odd being as i have two slots and your average computer of 2004 can take at least 2... i have ran across several gig sticks that are compatable and i was currious if i install 2 gigs will my computer accept it? thnx a ton for your help. also if someone could point me in the way of the cheapest graffix card that will push crysis that would be great:cool:

That computer will recognize up to 2gb of ram, 1gb in each slot.

i think jhonb35 has aswered your question about the RAM. But as for the graphic card, the mo for a reasonable price and reasonable screen resolution Crysis should run ok on a nvidia 8800 512mb. I am not a serous gamer and i have a 8600GTS 512mb and i am very content with the performance i get from it. Im sure a lot of gamers are laughing at me,but wat i say is true!! lool

Good luck

HP's site indicates each slot can only handle up to 512mb's of RAM. Must be a chipset limitation.

As such then, no.

We have mixed opnions on this one....... are we able to get some links posted and maybe the Op can post a link to his motherboard, as he said above.

Hp seems to contradict itself. It's says both, though the Mobo specification itself states maximum of 2gb.

EDIT: alright it seems Asus's stock, unaltered version of the board sports a max of 2gb, but HP's may only support the aforementioned amount. It even states so...

hhhmmm from the links i'm not sure which we should go for.... i would say 2GB but is also depending on how old the motherboard is as well....

Why don't you start doing some research before replying? 2 sites have stated that it supports 2gb total, crucial and corsair.

If It's an HP customized motherboard (well customized BIOS), regardless of the base specs ASUS gives for the board HP can change things around as much as they want, that's proven in the specs of the motherboard itself,

*PC manufacturer's maximum memory may differ*

Anyways it doesn't matter, I've found several threads with the same question(opposed to rather meaningless specs, given the situation); those that have tried their HP-ridden luck and upgraded to 2gb have seen all of it no problem.

zetarrit appears that if HP made your MOBO then it will support 1gig and if its made from asus or whatever it supports 2gig. from which one is it made? thatll give u ur answer

thank you all. i have decided that the odds seem to aim to the 2 gigs and plan to talk to best buy about a graffix card... but thanks for being entirely helpful everyone.

1. Since you say you already have 2 GB of memory, why don't you just try it and find out?

2. I would seriously recommend NOT going to Best Buy for a video card. If they do happen to have a decent card you want to buy, you will end up paying a ridiculous price for it. Online is the way...newegg.com is a great, cheap site.

For example: Last time I was at Best Buy I noticed a Geforce 8500GT for $150 and a Geforce 8600GT for $200. As opposed to like $50 and $80 before any rebates.
