RAM 128 MB
Disk Space 1.5 GB free
Video Card Super VGA (800x600)
Media CD-ROM or DVD

Recomended:
CPU 600 MHz (single CPU for Home edition, Single or dual for Professional edition)
RAM 256 MB
Disk Space 15 GB free
Video Card 1024x768

it can be done, you may be hard drive space limitied, so look into XPlite for a cut down version

i tried to boot the computer from the win xp cd and everything seems fine.

but when i get to the format options...(i.e. format the HDD to NTFS or FAT32), the screen turns blue with error message...and i have to reset the computer.

p.s. i have installed the win me before and everything works fine...so i dont think it is the hardware problem...thanks

Actually, the minimum specs are a bit lower than that. :)

233Mhz
64MB (lower than that and the setup will automatically exit)

My P2 350 runs it like a charm, plenty RAM in it though, you'd want to have at least 128MB for a somewhat nice experience. :)

Thanks alot...i gave up on the win xp already...i just install the win xp and everything works fine....save my headaches...^^

Yikes! ... Do you have Win 98? ....in my humble opinion, its a good idea to stay as far away from Win ME as possible..

Can you remember what the error message was during the XP install? If so, post it.

Yeah Windows ME is horrible.

Just for the heck of it once I installed Windows XP on a 133Mhz Pentium with 128MB of RAM. It actually ran ok. Eventually the PC stopped powering on but I doubt that was a windows issue. :)

Technically and theoretically it will install on a 486. I wouldn't try it though.

Or maybe I will.. hmmm. :D

xp will as i said run on that machine, it wont be the most enjoyable experience in the world, but if you want to run a easily setup home printer server then it will be a ok. It's all a matter of how you intend to use it.

ughh....please stay away from ME, there is a reason it didn't stick around for long. And Microsoft hardly acknowledges it's existence. I seen a timeline they had once, and it showed every OS they've had except ME?? Interesting to say the least.
Anyway, I also don't suggest XP on such a slow machine, one of my old machines had a 700mhz Celeron with 512mb RAM and its pretty slow, not totally unusable but it can be annoying at times. XP is just a more demanding OS and older systems have a hard time with it, I would suggest not having any less than 256mb of RAM honestly.
On your older machine I would say stick with 98, if you want to run XP get a better computer, but as always, it's up to you. I just had to speak up about ME though because that is such a horrible version of windows that its not funny.
